Jaka Železnikar: No luck, no gain

25 January – 14 February 2013
P74 Gallery, Trg Prekomorskih brigad 1, Ljubljana
Exhibition opening: Friday, 25 January 2013 at 7 p.m.

For the exhibition “Brez sreče se še čevelj ne obuje (No luck, no gain)” Jaka Železnikar investigates traditional proverbs in connection to cultural sampling. The exhibition is tied to the artist’s multi-year research of generative and/or non-linear ways of linguistic expression, which he realises in a wide palette of media, from print and digital computational works to spatial language interventions.

The work presented in the exhibition derives from the experience of e-literature (various language-art works which exploit the possibilities of the digitally networked computer) and from artistic practices such as (post) conceptual art. A feature of the work is also its meaningful impact on the conceptual web as it multifariously establishes itself as linguistic expression, both in its meaning as well as its mode of formation.

Says the author about the work: “I was interested in combining tradition and (some) methods characteristic of today’s Internet communication and contemporary culture, especially sampling. Thus, the results function at the same time on the familiar and the unusual, the new.”

Jaka Železnikar is a poet, one of the pioneers of net art/e-literature and a programmer/expert for Internet technology and culture. He has presented his work in Slovenia as well as abroad in both literary and exhibitional contexts.
