Polonca Lovšin focuses mainly on the dynamic and constantly changing relationship between the urban and the rural. This is also the theme of her doctoral study, which she is completing at Bauhaus University in Weimar.

In the first part of her project Polonca Lovšin focuses on artistic research involving an interdisciplinary study of the city and the countryside, and the integration of different methods and knowledge in the fields of urban planning, economics, sociology, architecture, and landscaping. She collects data and statistics and conducts interviews with professionals working in these selected fields. The collected material constitutes the basis of the visual work.
The end result is a video animation; according to the content, it is interesting as a sociological analysis of architecture and urban spaces; according to the method and form it is a “cartoon for adults” – a short, educational and humorous story. Because of the dryness and fragmentation of actual data, the construction of a story through video animation is essential.

Stop-motion animation itself enables the integration of fiction and the imaginary – it creates the impression of reality and fiction in one – combining data of current cultural characteristics and historical facts. As one of the most interesting animation techniques, stop-motion has a long history in film and video. The technique is based on the recording of individual frames of an object, moving it slightly, then recording again; thus creating an illusion of continuous movement. In recent decades, stop-motion animation has experienced a resurgence, especially in video art, music video spots and in the work of some contemporary artists, such as William Kentridge.

—

Current filmography of Polonca Lovšin:

The Right Balance, 2013
13 min
(presents the concept of a small town and the potential for local food production and self-organisation among the inhabitants)

Back in the City, 2011
13 min 35 sec
(explores our understanding of nature in urban and rural areas through bees and beekeeping)

City Cows, 2008
5 min 32 sec
(why farms in the city are meaningful)

Why Slovenian Houses Look They Way They Do, 2007
7 min 19 sec
(discloses the self-construction process of single-family houses, typical throughout Slovenia)

Polonca Lovšin has participated in numerous exhibitions at home and abroad, among others: at Kunstverein Gera, Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridge; A + A Gallery in Venice; as well as in Hamburg, Paris, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, Liege, Bologna, Poznań, Celje, Slovenj Gradec, and Ljubljana.
