A cat sitting on the piano with a cigarette between its teeth beneath a bleeding half-moon and an undefined white space inhabited by strange red creatures, animals, houses and plants, are two images that have probably remained in many people’s memories. The first is from the poster of the joint project by Zlatko Kav\u010di\u010d and Svetlana Makarovi\u010d Horror Mundi<\/em> and the second is from the album cover of the Slovenian group Nikki Louder entitled Our World Died Yesterday<\/em>.<\/p>\n

We can label Zoran Punger\u010dar’s visual language with the words direct, simple, stylised. Its characteristics include incorrectly proportioned beings, complete flatness and clean lines. Despite the otherwise refined drawing, he succeeds in ornamenting the images in a very unobtrusive way. Evidence to this is, for example, a spiral that represents water; marks on a chair that hint towards a pattern of wood or branches that are strung from a bare trunk and are actually only parallel<\/em> lines. In his creation process, he completes his handmade drawings with a computerised treatment of the motifs. Contemporary technology allows him to freely arrange drawn and painted protagonists and objects throughout the area until he reaches the final composition. The result is therefore similar to collage. The effect of various textures also contribute to this similarity. The use of watercolours with which he achieves tinting of blacks and grays adds an impression of softness. In his works we can follow the constant experimenting in building an image and its manipulation.<\/p>\n

Zoran Punger\u010dar meanders through imaginary abstract spaces in which he neither solves problems nor tries to answer questions. In his paintings and drawings he allows the process and intuition free rein. When he has a choice, he prefers to add colour across that which he created the day before, most often leading to a monochrome combination of collage, graphite lines and rough acrylic brushstrokes.<\/p>\n

Born in Postojna, Zoran Punger\u010dar (1985) is a visual artist, painter, graphic designer and illustrator of the youngest generation. Along with two solo exhibitions (Bikofe, Kino \u0160i\u0161ka Centre for Urban Culture) he has collaborated in a several group exhibitions in Multimedia Center Kibla in Maribor, on the Slovenian Independent Illustration Biennale at Kino \u0160i\u0161ka and on the Visions Festival in London. He lives and works in Ljubljana.<\/p>\n

He has been issuing fanzines and artist books since 2011 through his own publishing house Look Back and Laugh. He has also furnished the illustrations for numerous posters for music events (AKC Metelkova mesto, Kino \u0160i\u0161ka) and theatre performances. Among the biggest successes of this young artist is the publication of his illustrations in the American periodicals the New York Times<\/em> and the New Yorker<\/em>.<\/p>\n
