In my films, architecture and landscape are framing mostly simple actions performed by a team of friends and relatives. A collection of these sites raises the question as to whether the related image construction is about the framework of a plot, or rather constitutive material of narration itself. While showing location shots and film stills, I would like to focus on the iconographic dimension of images: how much does the grid-related form co-perform content in a single shot, and how much can a grid-sequence of images create its own narration representative of my idea of storytelling.”

Josef Dabernig is a visual artist and filmmaker. He graduated in sculpture from the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 1981, but later on he extended his artistic practice to other media: film, photography, text and questions of architectural display. Dabernig designed the architecture for Igor Zabel’s Individual Systems exhibition at the 50th Venice Biennale in 2003. He participated at Manifesta in Ljubljana and in St. Petersburg (2000 and 2014), the Venice Biennale (2001 and 2003), and the Gwangju Biennale (2012). His short films have been shown at the film festivals in Venice, Rotterdam, London, Graz, Toronto, etc. Dabernig’s solo exhibitions include mumok and MAK in Vienna, MOCAK in Krakow, Kunsthaus and Neue Galerie in Graz, and P74 in Ljubljana. Dabernig is a honorary member of the Igor Zabel Association for Culture and Theory. He lives in Vienna.

—

Organised by: Zavod P.A.R.A.S.I.T.E.
