In 1996 Marko Pogačnik self-published the handmade book Item: BOOK in an edition of 60 copies. In the book Zmajeve črte, ekologija in umetnost [Dragon lines, ecology and art] (Obzorja, 1986) Pogačnik wrote: “In the fall of 1965 I happened to fleetingly read some sentences from the newspaper Gorenjski glas that someone had carefully cut out onto strips of paper of the same format. I came across a sentence, which I later published in EVA as a motto of the series: ‘Towards the north are fewer and fewer trees, fewer and fewer plants, everything is in short supply, except for the vast expanse of snow and ice.’ […] In the following weeks I went deeply into the feeling that came over me alongside the vision of the disappearance of multiplicity and the appearance of singular whiteness. Then I dreamed of hunting a white polar bear in the completely white polar landscape, white on white. […] I materialized the inspiration of hunting a polar bear in the form of my first book with the title BOOK.”

Item: BOOK joins Marko Pogačnik to the inventor of the artist’s book in Europe, Dieter Roth (1959), and to Ed Ruscha in the USA (1963). The artist’s book is the visual medium that enabled the OHO movement (Marko Pogačnik and Iztok Gaister, later also Matjaž Hanžek, Franci Zagoričnik, Miljenko Matanović, Braco Rotar, Tomaž Šalamun, etc.) to make a radical breakthrough into the visual arts world, bringing deviation, excess and provocation to the world of local modernism. Item: BOOK announced numerous key novelties that were typical for the production of OHO’s books from 1966–1969: small editions, handmade by their authors and self-published. They were marked by do-it-yourself strategies, not only in terms of content, but aboveall by their intermedia nature.

In Slovenia the OHO Group opened the chapter of independent publishing and independent artistic (self-)distribution. The idea of independent publishing itself is closely tied to the idea of the artist activist. Books – separated from the institutional framework – can thus circulate freely and are important objects of communication.

Alja Piry, With all due respect

ZINEZINE

Alja Piry – Beli Sladoled – Gašper Kunšič – Infopeka – Ivana Bajc – Jasmina Grudnik – Jimmy Barka Experience – Jure Šajn & Primož Zorko – Lea Ludvik – Lea Vučko & Hana Jesih – Lucija Rosc – LUD Literatura – Martina Jurak – Matic Medja – Mina Fina – Nejc Bahor – Nevena Aleksovski – Neža Oblak – Nina Rojc – Rok Roudi – Simon Kocjančič – Specialka – Tadej Štrok – Tadej Vaukman – Tea Hvala – Tilyen Mucik

The exhibition ZINEZINE brings a current overview of th creators of fanzines in Slovenia.
