The book The Second Explosion: The 1990s <\/em>was released alongside the eponymous exhibition project which is currently on view at P74 Gallery, Gallery \u0160kuc and the National Museum of Slovenia \u2013 Metelkova in Ljubljana as well as at the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koro\u0161ka (Koro\u0161ko galerijo likovnih umetnosti Slovenj Gradec \u2013 KGLU) and the Carinthian Regional Museum in Slovenj Gradec. It is the first critical, selective overview of the key radical practices of contemporary arts of the 1990s that represent a certain continuation of artistic practices that interrupted the modern art of the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1990s we are referring to postconceptual practices, institutional critique, new politicization, activism, the social turn, new public arts, etc. The classic political themes were exchanged with new identity politics and social activism; universal understandings completely lost their validity.<\/p>\n The richly illustrated publication brings texts by Bo\u017eo Repe, Polona Pober\u017enik, Nina Popi\u010d, Tadej Poga\u010dar and monographic contributions about the oeuvres of the participating artists by Barbara Sterle Vurnik, Dejan Habicht, Tja\u0161a Poga\u010dar Podgornik and Vladimir Vidmar. The essay by Bo\u017eo Repe \u201cThe Nineties. Between the Promises and the Facts\u201d offers a thorough historical and political context of the 1990s. The author takes time with the key political events, from the collapse of Yugoslavia to Slovenian independence, from bold promises to unrealised announcements, which we regret today. Tadej Poga\u010dar in \u201cThe Second Explosion: The Nineties. New Radical Practices\u201d discusses the cultural, political and geopolitical context of culture in 1990s Slovenia. He tackles the cultural policies, venues and organizations, artistic practices and new radical practices that decisively marked the artistic production. In \u201cBreakthrough. New Artistic Practices and Alternative Culture of the 90\u2019s: Koro\u0161ka\u201d Polona Pober\u017enik and Nina Popi\u010d describe the artistic and music production on the periphery in the 1990s, focusing on the Me\u017eica, Mislinja and Drava valleys.<\/p>\n Edited by Tadej Poga\u010dar.
