The source of the material behind her expression can be found in intimate everyday experience, the images and the overall intervention serve as commentaries on different societal and social mechanisms and their conditions and embeddedness within them. Joining the drawings are paintings and for the first time also objects. In conjunction with the opening of the exhibition, the artist will be launching a new fanzine.

Nevena Aleksovski begins to build up the installation on a painted wall. In doing so, she limits her space of creativity. On the wall, she places paintings and drawings that have been created on various backgrounds, in diverse techniques, even charcoal marks that she scribbles directly on the wall. The images are simplified, the motifs clearly readable, the formal solutions minimalist. Flat shapes and angular lines prevail. We recognize plants, fruits, human body parts, a female figure, genres such as portraits, landscapes and still life – genres that have traditionally been assigned to women. The mood on the works often brings a feeling of anxiety, isolation, melancholy. The artist reaches the latter through the partitioning of the works in the installation and through the undefined, empty space in which the motifs levitate. Paper cut-outs have the effect of being an additional gaping hole that engulfs the images. We often see pairs in the images – a pair of shoes, two faces, two trees – which give an alienating effect. We can understand the explicit nudity of the figures as an emphasis on gender and at the same time as a complete disclosing of the captured mental states. Even though there are minor differences among the female figures, we can understand them as universally female and simultaneously as self-portraits that point to an active subject and not a passive observer. As a woman, as an artist, and also as an immigrant, Nevena deals with different roles and identities, through which she regularly passes through and which dictate her everyday life. Her style of drawing and painting reminds us of the designing of symbols. The images include the basic strokes to identify a motif, making them somewhat universal and easily recognizable – precisely for this reason one initially has a feeling of closeness.

Nevena Aleksovski’s images and installation are like a rebus with numerous possible solutions that trigger an unending game of associations and a distance which contributes to a unease towards the works themselves. The viewer constantly remains somewhere in-between the motifs and the intimate stories behind them that are never entirely revealed.

—

Nevena Aleksovski (1984, Serbia) received her B.A. in painting at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad in 2008 and her M.A. in cultural studies from the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Ljubljana.
