The catalog CODE:RED arrives at a fortuitious moment: it not only documents the first retrospective exhibition about the project (at the City Art Gallery of Ljubljana from 20 September to 4 November 2018) but it also marks the project’s 20-year anniversary. The catalog includes rich photographic material as well as texts: including a reprint of \u201cWhy Sexuality is Work\u201d by legendary feminist speaker and activist Silvia Federici; \u201cThe Connection between Art and Activism\u201d by New York sociologist Melissa Ditmore; \u201cArt \u2013 Work \u2013 Gender or the Project CODE:RED\u201d by curator and theorist of visual culture Suzana Milevska and \u201cCODE:RED and the World of Art\u201d by the curator of the exhibition Alenka Gregori\u010d. The catalog has been designed by Ajdin Ba\u0161i\u0107 and edited by Alenka Gregori\u010d.<\/p>\n

More about the project CODE:RED<\/p>\n

CODE:RED (1999\u2013today) is recognized as one of the most internationally resounding contemporary art projects that combines political art, activism and participatory forms of practice. In the last two decades it has emerged in close collaboration with NGOs, experts, activists, as well as groups and communities of sexual workers around the world, who are fighting for their rights. The collaboration took place in partnership relations and in publicly expressed solidarity. Through the years, various problems were exposed: self-organization of urban minorities, poltical operations, informal economy, global sex work and human trafficking. CODE:RED draws its content from models of public art of the late-1960s and 1970s. The project has been presented at many significant international biennials of contemporary art, among them, Venice, Tirana, Prague, Sao Paulo, Istanbul, as well as at venues in New York, San Francisco, Madrid, London, Zagreb, Skopje, Berlin, Leipzig, Moscow – bringing the total of international exhibitions to date to 55 throughout Europe, the United States and South America. Three thematic issues of the artist newspaper Sex Worker<\/em>, two artist’s books and the monography publication CODE:RED<\/em> (2011) have also accompanied the project.<\/p>\n
