Wer das erste Knopfloch verfehlt, kommt mit dem Zuknöpfen nicht zu Rande.
J. W. Goethe

One of the more interesting characteristics of language is that communication simultaneously manufactures discommunication. The meaning of words, concepts, signs is always dependent upon the context. A word ever only approximates speaker’s intention, with an ironic turn it can also be diametrically opposite to its dictionary definition. In his quote, Goethe suggests that if we miss the first hole when fastening buttons, we won’t manage to button up. With this idea, he’s talking more about the method than about buttons; it’s up to us if we get upset by that.

With the exhibition Until the Last Button Dejan Habicht has reached into family archives and pulled out from the basement – a very elementary metaphor for the subconscious – the apparently loosely connected relapses of his youth. The exhibition exposes role models and patterns that fundamentally influenced Habicht’s artistic formation and marked out his field of preference and aesthetic parameters. He links these elements into a puzzle that, while not creating a complete picture – as we’re used to from films with happy endings – produces a new riddle. In short, the purpose of Habicht’s puzzle is not to comprehend the “bigger picture” but rather “to be puzzled”.
